-- iNEER --
International Network for Engineering Education and Research

The purpose of the International Network for Engineering Education and Research (iNEER) is to help advance engineering education and research in regions around the world through international linkages and cooperative partnerships. It is an informal, networking community comprised of educators from academe, industry and government bonded by a desire to work collaboratively to elevate the quality of engineering education in institutions around the world. The ultimate goal is to enhance the learning process in particular and the education experience in general for students who will become engineers of the 21st century.

ICEE 1998-2001In addition to engineering, the community also includes faculty, students and practicing professionals in related areas such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, computer engineering, education psychology and materials.

iNEER is the principal sponsor of the International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEE). In coordination with the ICEE International Steering Committee (ISC), iNEER encourages innovative ideas and models for international cooperation. It also encourages new proposals to host the ICEE or similar conferences and workshops. The Network also helps develop collaborative initiatives emanating from these get-togethers.

Furthermore, iNEER supports and helps implement innovative systems and forums for international cooperation and information exchange. One example, is a web-based directory and repository of information in research and education.

In conjunction with partners around the world, iNEER also publishes information relating to international engineering education, both on its website as well in print format.

The iNEER Secretariat coordinates as well as spearheads the development and implementation of the initiatives mentioned above. The iNEER International Advisory Board (the iNEER Board), which provides oversight and guidance, is comprised of representatives of sponsoring organizations.

International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEE)

Organized as an information dissemination and exchange forum, the International Conference on Engineering Education emphasizes the dissemination of information on state-of-the-art advances in education and research, especially new approaches that link the two activities in addressing the education goals of young engineers of the 21st century.

Programs of ICEE also emphasize strongly the importance of advancing the state of knowledge through trans-national cooperation and cross-cultural networking. It is a conference series that highlights the worldwide progress and experiences in engineering education; it is also a platform for creating mutually beneficial collaborative efforts.

The responsibility for creating a high quality ICEE technical program, as well as the conference budget, rests with the host institution; however, when requested and subject to a formal agreement, the iNEER Secretariat provides help in development of the conference programs and associated workshops.

The venue for ICEE is rotated to different regions around the world.

The Secretary-General of iNEER also is the Secretary-General of the ICEE International Steering Committee (ISC).

Review of ICEE Proposals

Proposals for hosting ICEE conferences and related events are submitted to the iNEER/ICEE General Secretariat. The ICEE International Steering Committee and the iNEER Board are the reviewing bodies.

The results of the review are communicated to the applicants by the Secretary General for iNEER/ICEE. Incomplete proposals are returned to the applicants for improvement and resubmission.

Approval of Proposals

Once a proposal is approved, iNEER/ICEE will execute a memorandum of understanding with the proposing institution endorsing the conference as an iNEER/ICEE function. Only conferences meeting certain normal expectations for an ICEE conference will be endorsed. For details, please refer to the iNEER/ICEE Proposal Guide.

iNEER/ICEE Proposal Guide

The iNEER Board and the ICEE-ISC have jointly developed the iNEER/ICEE Proposal Guide. Persons wishing to submit proposals to host future iNEER- and ICEE-related activities should refer to this document. It is posted on the iNEER website. Copies may be obtained also from the iNEER Secretariat.

ICEE Education Workshops

Either during an ICEE conference or outside of it, iNEER/ICEE sponsors Education Workshops to initiate and strengthen alliances for regional collaboration in education and research activities. For more details, please see ”Recommended Process for ICEE Education Workshops to Discuss/Recommend International Cooperation in Education and Research” on the iNEER website.

iNEER/ICEE Secretariat

The iNEER General-Secretariat is located at NJIT, promulgated through an MOU signed between the Chair of the iNEER Board, and the President of NJIT.

The iNEER Website

The website address is http://www.ineer.org. Its main purpose is to facilitate information exchange and dissemination among the iNEER community. In addition to general information and announcements relating to international cooperation and networking in engineering education and research, the website also archives proceedings of past ICEE conferences.

The iNEER website is maintained by individuals and institutions that donate their sponsorship and/or services with the ultimate goal of enhancing the quality of engineering education and research experience for students around the world. The current hosts are New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Newark, New Jersey, USA and VSB - Technical University of Ostrava, Ostrava, Czech Republic.

The contents of the iNEER website are the sole responsibility of iNEER, which works collaboratively with NJIT and VSB to ensure that the usual standards for academic websites are maintained.

The Secretary General of iNEER serves as Editor of the website. The current webmaster is Professor Radim Farana of VSB - Technical University of Ostrava. Mr. Raymond Hayling of NJIT is at present the Associate Webmaster.

Developing and Implementing Education Partnerships

Further to developing and implementing conferences, regional education workshops, and a web-based information exchange system, the iNEER General Secretariat also aids in the development of regional partnership linkages. With the help of an international network of experts from industry, academe and governments, the Secretariat responds -- to the extent feasible within available resources - to requests for assistance in special initiatives in international engineering education and research, including exchanges and broadly defined cooperative agreements to initiate long-term interaction. Examples of the latter were the four agreements signed at ICEE-2000. Present to sign were the heads of academic institutions from U.S.A., Taiwan and the Czech Republic. These agreements define the framework for long-term education and research collaboration. For more information, please contact the iNEER/ICEE General Secretariat.
