PANEL DISCUSSION ON

ENGINEERING EDUCATION COALITIONS - A RETROSPECTIVE

The Engineering Education Coalitions program was developed to stimulate bold, innovative, and comprehensive models for systemic reform of undergraduate engineering education and to increase the retention of students, especially women and those minorities underrepresented in engineering. The Coalitions address the need for improved introductory experience in engineering and increased teaching of integration in the engineering curriculum. Innovative partnerships such as these provide a focal point for achieving a change in the paradigm underlying engineering education.

The coalitions created through this program have produced significant reforms that have invigorated undergraduate engineering curricula to produce graduates that are better prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century global workforce. The coalitions have done this while simultaneously increasing diversity and student retention and graduation rates. This panel session focuses on the efforts of the coalitions and the lessons learned through their activities. Discussion topics include teaming; experience-based learning; sharing outcomes/results; culture change; lessons learned; strategies for success; and plans beyond the Coalitions.
