International Conference
on Engineering Education
ICEE-2003
Valencia, Spain, July 22-26, 2003
2. CALL FOR PAPERS
WORKSHOP: CONVERGENCE
OF INTERNATIONAL LEVEL IN HIGHER EDUCATIONPROGRAMS - e.g.
IMPLEMENTING THE BOLOGNA DECLARATION
The Bologna Declaration is a statement of intent to establish a European
Learning Space that principally enables mobility of students, staff, transferability
of credit and compatible learning cycles. The spirit of the Bologna Declaration
can and should be implemented to promote Trans-world recognition. This
workshop will concentrate on first cycle (undergraduate) and second cycle
(post graduate) qualifications, with the emphasis on shorter cycles in
common with the 3-5-8 model commonly attributed to Bologna. Industry requires
a skills base which is often lacking in both first and second cycle degrees
where the focus is more on theory and less on applications. Whilst the
present market place satisfies the demand for high calibre engineers the
increasing demand from industry for technologists has not been met by
educational establishments. Attention should therefore be focussed on
the content of first cycle degrees and their relevance to the labour market
and the marrying of the second cycle with the first when compared with
the seamless bachelor/masters approach offered by many today.
This workshop will examine the processes required to establish collaborative
programme delivery between universities in the Europe and the rest of
the world. The issues that emerge From this session will be considered
in the context of the aims of the Bologna Declaration and other international
agreements such as those involving accreditation, with the intention that
proposals will be put forward that seek to offer mechanisms to permit
future progress.
You are invited to contribute
to this workshop with a short presentation at the start. This activity
will be limited to no more than four presentations so as to allow plenty
of time for discussion.
This conference emphasises
development of international partnerships in education and research. Through
special sessions and international workshops, it provides ample opportunity
for discussing future cooperative projects. For more information on iNEER,
