We describe how we utilize the Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) to create laboratory manuals which are directly linked to the equipment description, specifications and application notes. Rapidly improving access to the internet and browsing tool availability provides a suitable infrastructure for alternative teaching methods. The internet capability is especially suitable for augmenting the laboratory manuals which frequently require references to the information on the equipment.
We have designed the photonics education laboratories at Boston University to serve several undergraduate/graduate courses supported by a Combined Research-Curriculum Program grant from NSF. The laboratories are equipped with personal computers which serve not only for equipment control and data analysis but also as web interface to access the course materials and laboratory manuals. The laboratory manuals are prepared as HTML documents. Through collaboration with Melles Griot - the manufacturer of the majority of hardware in our education laboratories - we are in the process of creating HTML documents for the description and specifications of the specific equipment and the application notes. These documents are hyperlinked to the laboratory manuals providing instant access for the students. The hyperlinked lab manuals also provide ease in access, archiving, updating, and dissemination
