The workshop sensitizes various concepts regarding how Active-Collaborative Learning (ACL) may be used in the typical college classroom, as well as the underlying rational as to why this methodology works and what the benefits are to both the students and the faculty. The workshop is presented in an active-collaborative format in order to demonstrate to the participants the value of this teaching style and provides the opportunity to experience some of the more common ACL structures such as: teaming, think-aloud-paired-problem-solving; think-pair-share; and the jigsaw. In addition, the workshop covers student teaming issues such as: how to form student teams; team building issues; team roles; characteristics of performing and non-performing teams; and how faculty can deal with dysfunctional teams or disruptive team members. The workshop concludes with an overview of learning styles and how understanding a student's learning style can affect a faculty member's teaching style. |
