Professor Anderson is a founder, a Director and the Chief Technology Officer of HeartSine® Technologies Inc. Professor Anderson formed the Northern Ireland Bio-Engineering Centre (NIBEC) and was its first Director. He was also the Head of the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ulster (Jordanstown), Northern Ireland. He was the head of BioEngineering at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Northern Ireland, when the world's first mobile coronary care unit was launched in 1967.

Later he was responsible for the development of the world's first truly portable defibrillator designed for use outside of the hospital, which was subsequently manufactured and sold throughout the world. Professor Anderson holds a M Phil and D Phil in BioEngineering and was granted a Personal Chair in Medical Electronics in 1990. In 1994 he was made a founding Fellow of the Biological Engineering Society. He is a Chartered Scientist and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. He has published over 300 papers in the field of bioengineering research and holds 40 patents in the field. He was previously an active member of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) standards committees for conventional defibrillation and semi automatic defibrillation.

He has also been responsible for developing leading edge technology utilized in many defibrillators, including semi automatic and telephone controlled devices, being marketed today. His publication record reflects his intense interest in sudden cardiac death with particular reference to the early and rapid treatment of cardiac arrest.

In 2002 Professor Anderson was awarded a UK Business Fellowship, one of only twelve in the UK. During his working career, he has been responsible for ten start-up companies in the field of medical engineering.

Professor Helen Atkinson was appointed to a Chair in Metals Processing in the Department of Engineering at the University of Leicester in 2002, having previously been a Reader in Engineering Materials at the University of Sheffield since 2000. She joined the University of Sheffield from Sheffield City Polytechnic in 1989 and worked before that for the UK Atomic Energy Authority at Harwell. Her work at Harwell included a period as Assistant to the Director for Nuclear Power working on strategic business planning.

Professor Atkinson is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, a Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, and a Chartered Engineer. She has a first class degree in Metallurgy and Materials Science from Cambridge University and a PhD on the transmission electron microscopy of grain growth in oxide scales from Imperial College of Science and Technology. Her research now centres on semi-solid processing (thixoforming) of metallic alloys and also on the application of statistics to materials research problems (for example, prediction of inclusions sizes in clean steels). Her particular interests in semi-solid processing include alloy development, modelling of die fill, and rheology in the semi-solid state She has collaborated widely with industry (e.g. IMI) and between departments, running interdisciplinary projects with Statistics, Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Materials. She recently led an EPSRC project with Physics on micromanipulation at high temperatures in environmental scanning electron microscopy.

She has served on a number of bodies including:- UK Government Technology Foresight Materials Panel (1994-99); Chemicals and Materials Task Force for the Government's Foresight Crime Prevention Panel (1999-2001); Office of Science and Technology Action Group on Sensors (1996-97); Institute of Materials Council (1992-96); Institute of Metals Council (1989-91); Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) Teaching Quality Assessment in Materials (1996-99); British Transport Police Committee (the national committee responsible for the governance of the Transport Police) (1998-2003); Lord Chancellor's Advisory Committee for the Appointment of Magistrates in Rotherham (2000-02). She is a member of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Structural Materials College and has served on and chaired Panels prioritising proposals for funding. She was a member of the EPSRC Panel evaluating the Materials Portfolio (~800 projects) (1998-2000). She is a member of the Engineering Professors Council Committee.

Renata S. Engel is Associate Dean for Academic Programs in the College of Engineering at Penn State. A member of the Penn State faculty since 1990, she is Professor of Engineering Design and Engineering Science and Mechanics she has served as Executive Director of the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence. Engel earned a BS in Engineering Science from Penn State and a PhD in engineering mechanics from the University of South Florida.

Through various collaborative efforts, she has affected changes in the engineering curriculum at Penn State, primarily to incorporate elements of design in fundamental engineering courses. At the University level, she has provided leadership to Penn State’s efforts to assess student learning outcomes assessment, to integrate inquiry and discovery into undergraduate courses, and to develop programs to promote inclusive classroom environments. Engel’s discipline specific research couples her interest in design and manufacturing with advanced materials. Motivated to improve manufacturing process or products, she has modeled liquid injection processes, polymer cure kinetics, metal powder compaction and powder compact strengthening via high temperatures. For her individual and collaborative contributions to engineering education, she has received several awards including the University’s George W. Atherton Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Penn State Engineering Society’s Outstanding Teaching Award, and the Dow Outstanding Young Faculty Award. Engel was also a member of the team that won the 1998 Boeing Outstanding Educator Award and is a Fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education. An active member in the American Society for Engineering Education, Engel has held several leadership positions including president, and currently serves as a member of its Executive Board.

Paul Jowitt is Past President (2009-10) of the Institution of Civil Engineers, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He is a Member of the EPSRC Peer Review College. He was a Board Member of Scottish Water from 2002-2008, and a non-Executive Director of United Utilities Water from 2009-2011.

He is a graduate of Imperial College, London and was a Lecturer in the Civil Engineering Department there from 1974 until he took up the Chair of Civil Engineering Systems at Heriot Watt University in 1987. In 1989 he was appointed Head of the Civil Engineering Department and then Head of the combined Department of Civil and Offshore Engineering from 1991 to 1999.

In 1999 he was appointed as the Executive Director of the Scottish Institute of Sustainable Technology (www.sistech.co.uk ), a joint venture between the University and the international engineering company MWH. SISTech is a research-led consultancy providing innovative solutions for sustainable development in the natural and built environments. Its operational activities are based at Heriot Watt University at its main campus in Edinburgh but with links to MWH activities worldwide and to the International Centre for Island Technology at Heriot Watt’s Orkney campus.

Paul Jowitt’s major consultancy and research interests concern the issues of sustainable development, risk, and the development of systems-level solutions within civil engineering, the built environment, and environmental management. These activities include the development of sustainability strategies, policies, and decision-making frameworks for industry, the public sector, higher education and professional institutions in the UK and internationally. His work also includes sustainability assessments, carbon accounting and triple bottom line reporting for the built environment. Current activity also includes the development of solution frameworks for the UN Millennium Development Goals.

Other major areas of activity include water resources systems modelling, asset and resource management, carbon accounting and the environmental and engineering applications of systems modelling, optimisation, reliability and risk assessment. This research has been funded mainly by a combination of EPSRC research grants and water industry research contracts in such areas as water distribution systems, wastewater treatment plant modelling & control, drought management and sustainable water resource management.

Paul Jowitt is the lead investigator in a collaborative consortium between Heriot-Watt University and Cambridge University on the ISSUES Project (ISSUES - Implementation Strategies for Sustainable Urban Environment Systems) to facilitate knowledge transfer for EPSRC’s Sustainable Urban Environments Programme.

Paul Jowitt chaired the ICE Presidential Commission - “Engineering without Frontiers” - to examine society’s expectations of the civil engineer in the 21st Century and the engineer’s contribution to meeting the UN Millennium Development Goals. He was the author of the ICE’s 6th Brunel International Lecture “Engineering Civilisation form the Shadows” which addressed the twin issues of Poverty and Climate Change. He was a member of the International Jury for the Mondialogo Engineering Awards (sponsored by UNESCO and Daimler-Chrysler)

He has experience in dealing with the media (National TV, Radio, Press), appearing on such as Newsnight, the 6 O’clock News and Radio 4 in connection with a number of issues ranging from water supply, drought management, best management practices for urban drainage, waste management, to the upkeep and maintenance of the Forth Bridge. In 1996 he presented a lecture on water resources at the Edinburgh International Science Festival entitled “From the Metamorphosis of Ajax to the Sweet Water of Leith”.

He is Chairman of the charity Engineers Against Poverty, and a trustee of the Forth Bridges Visitor Centre Trust and The Steamship Sir Walter Scott Trust. He is a founder member of "The Edge" – an ICE/RIBA/CIBSE Ginger Group created to increase public and political awareness of the role of engineers and architects. In his private life he enjoys old cars and old houses. He is the owner and restorer of one of Edinburgh’s last surviving (and B-listed) mews stables properties adjacent to the Water of Leith in Edinburgh’s Dean Village. He is also an allotment holder at the Dean Gallery. Since 1966 he has been the owner, driver and restorer of a 1937 Morgan Motor Tricycle (a Matchless MX4 990cc V-Twin powered Barrel Back Super Sports). He also enjoys painting and sculpture.

Dr. Luiz Carlos Scavarda do Carmo received his bachelor in Telecommunications Engineering in 1967 from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro - PUC-Rio - and subsequently received his Master (1970) and Doctoral Degrees in Physics (1976), from the same Institution.

Since 1976, as a Professor in PUC-Rio, he has published more than 100 articles with his students and co-workers around the world and started an outreach program for diffusing the Engineering Profession in the High School. In the 90's he served as Dean of Engineering in PUC-Rio, period when he participated actively in a process of Engineering Education reform in Brazil.

During the last 10 years he has organized four international conferences on Engineering, particularly aiming to foster the internationalization of Engineering Education. Presently he is full Professor of PUC-Rio and is member of the Pan-American Academy of Engineering and was recently elected as member of the National (Brazilian) Academy of Engineering.

He serves now as vice-President for Administrative affairs of PUC-Rio and is studying mechanisms for auto sufficiency of private research universities in Latin America, with special interest on those that contribute to innovation and entrepreneurial development. He is now a founder member of the INOVA program of modernization of Engineering in Brazil, a program backed by the Brazilian Industry, Government, Civil Associations and several Schools of Engineering. He now chairs the OAS supported program "Engineering for the Americas" which aims to provide high level workforce for the technology based sustainable development of the Hemisphere of the Americas.
